MAUSAM has an old-world charm, no two opinions about it. The magic of the good old days is delectable and it's a great feeling to go back in time. Right from the setting to the costumes to the overall ambience, the film succeeds in pulling you back in time. But like I pointed out at the outset, the writing leaves a sour taste in your mouth. It lacks meat. The graph of the film moves downwards with each passing episode. The war and the aftermath doesn't work. Supriya Pathak Kapur is first-rate. Anupam Kher is wasted. Manoj Pahwa is wonderful, as always. The actors essaying the role of Sonam's father and sister are natural. Vaibhav Talwar gets no scope. Aditi Sharma excels in a brief role.On the whole, MAUSAM is a colossal disappointment! Read more

Mausam begins on a beautiful note. Loads of atmospherics, mood, sentiment and stunning visuals of a sleepy rural backdrop, captured in arresting mode by cinematographer Binod Pradhan make you sit back determined for an artistic tryst with cinema.Yes, the allure of the first half of the film lies in the vintage love story which proceeds through unsaid words, unexpressed feelings, stolen glances and lots of melody (Pritam Singh).Don't be dissuaded however, for Mausam has lots to offer to the viewer who doesn't mind his cinema languorous, laid back and moody, with loads of beauty. The film tries to strike a balance between art and mainstream cinema and succeeds partially.Read more. Mausam starts off significantly fresh, making up for slightly overdone cutesiness with heart and flavour. The setting is enchanting and real, the characters are likable, the supporting cast stays pretty solid throughout, and Shahid revs up the energy while his classically gorgeous heroine Sonam Kapoor does what she does best, skipping around looking breathtaking. Finally, giving you opinion about a film called Mausam turn us critics into weathermen, so here goes: Bright and cheerful day, hit by a predictable, gloomy downpour and turned into a damp, middling mess. Perfect one-day cricket conditions, as the English would say. Read more

Pankaj Kapoor has tried to mix in too many turbulent elements of the past, intersperse them and in the process has ended up burning his fingers. Kapoor has linked events of Operation Blue Star, trouble in the Kashmir Valley, Ayodhya and the bringing down of the Babri Masjid, Bombay Bomb Blasts, Twin Tower strike in New York and Godhra in Ahmedabad. Through these events he links a love story that stands the test of time.Like an overcooked dish, MAUSAM, towards the end leaves a soggy taste in your mouth. Sad. Because as a director, Pankaj Kapoor has shown his class. It's just that he was playing with too many ideas in one go. Give him time and he will be one of our best.Read more

Mausam is an ambitious film that seeks to blend the conventions of mass-oriented Mumbai entertainers with the style and substance of a more intimate and meaningful mode of storytelling. But the tools that Kapur employs are simple and uncomplicated. Just as well. Mausam is nowhere near flawless. Its first half is visually scrumptious and eminently watchable; the second is a touch erratic and unconvincing. To conclude, Mausam could quite easily have ended up being a stodgy, strenuous and self-conscious drama. Writer-director Kapur, the accomplished actor that he is, orchestrates the emotional ups and downs of his tale with a commendable degree of moderation for the most part. Mausam is certainly worth a viewing.

What’s Good: The music; the performances of the lead actors.

What’s Bad: The slow pace of the drama; the inclusion of too many events in the film; lack of emotional appeal; too many coincidences in the lives of Shahid and Sonam.

Verdict: Mausam lacks the heart-warming quality of a love story. However, it will do above-average business at the box-office.

Loo break: A couple in the second half.

Watch or Not?: Watch it for the songs and the performances of Shahid and Sonam.

Every scene is beautifully shot, the romance is meant to grow on you with its artful glances and coy exchanges. But instead of a slow burn, it's just plain exhaustion. In the age of instant email and easily transported cellphones, the lovers leave no forwarding addresses or contact numbers. They rely instead on the goodness of neighbours and the willingness of relatives. This is Pankaj Kapur's first film as director and clearly he's aiming for an old fashioned epic. He pours his heart and mind into it, tying it up in a neat little bow into a message for insaniyat in the time of brutality, but I wish his lovers had been more ardent. And more suited to each other. He's a peacock and she's a swan and the twain shall never mate.Read more

The first thing that comes to my mind after watching this film was that why on earth did it take so much time to complete. Coming to how it is, well you do not expect this Khichdi from a veteran like Pankaj Kapur.Pankaj Kapur in his directorial debut tries to tell a beautiful love story but if only he would have stuck to that, the film would have been a better experience. He touches the Kashmir, Mumbai, Ahemadabad riots and even the 9/11 twin tower blast in America but only from the surface. The plot was excellent only if the focus was maintained. Though the first half is still watchable, the second merely disappoints and the climax is outright stupid.Read more
