Tigmanshu Dhulia's new offering SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER merges power and politics with love, lust and betrayal, resulting in a heady cocktail that hits your mind.SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER lives up to the expectations, on that front. Though it's not Tigmanshu's best effort [I genuinely feel he's capable of much more], I'd like to state that the film has several moments that bowl you completely, dialogue that deserve an ovation and of course, stellar act by the principal actors of this film.On the whole, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER is a well-made film that works for its powerful plot, engaging script, commanding dialogue and super performances. Tigmanshu Dhulia has had the guts to do something unusual within commercial parameters and the effort needs to be lauded. Read moreReview by:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive Ratings:2.5/5
The film opens intriguingly and maintains an even pace, but it's betrayed ultimately by a confused script that hobbles around in all directions, never quite finding its rhythm. Dhulia knows the milieu, so the film has an earthiness that is attractive, and much of the dialogue is clever. Yet, key dramatic scenarios are handled amateurishly - like a sequence in which a simple misunderstanding causes Jimmy to cut off the mistress he's so vulnerable to. Or one in which Mahie pours her heart out to her husband from the other side of a curtain; only turns out it isn't her husband on the other side. It's lapses of logic like these that are unforgivable. I'm going with two-and-a-half out five for Tigmanshu Dhulia's Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster - it's inspired by a classic, but let down by its own triteness. Not a perfect film, but one that has its moments. Read moreReview by:Saibal Chatterjee Site:NDTV Ratings:3/5
Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster is an audacious tongue-in-cheek homage to Guru Dutt's timeless classic Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Don't believe the director's protestations to the contrary. Dhulia's film even opens with an unabashed tribute to Guru Dutt's film with skeletons being dug out during an excavation.Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster turns progressively Shakespearean towards the end with three protagonists hurling towards self-destruction. As they delve toward doom you are left with no choice but to watch the characters as pathetic paradigms of an era that has long gone.Guru Dutt would have probably choked at this bad land bawdy burlesque of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Lekin man-na padega, boss. Tigmanshu Dhulia's homage to Dutt is saucy if somewhat uneven in tone and jagged at the edges.read moreReview by:Sukanya VermaSite:Rediff Ratings:3.5/5
Borrowing liberally from the Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth, Tigmanshu Dhulia's Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster owes more to Vishal Bhardwaj's Maqbool than Guru Dutt's Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam. It tries to be both, balancing its personal homage spirit with a gripping tale of intricate politics, love and betrayal set against a decadent royalty that's rapidly losing touch with the realities of modern-day existence.Dhulia is certainly an under-rated director who seeks inspiration from small-town India and its crime and political scene. If he is to emerge as a key figure in this movement led by Bhardwaj, Kashyap and others, he must make more films like Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. Better films, one may say. The film is a must-watch for two reasons. First, because it is heavily imbued with atmospherics and mood which creates a whole new world that's somewhat familiar yet totally intriguing. The Sahib's world is a sepia-stained picture you may have seen so many times, while visiting museums and empty palaces. The film may be a finely crafted drama, yet it unfolds with thriller pace, keeping you on the edge of the seat till the very end. Enjoy the experience of a revised and re-mixed story, well told.Don't like run-of-the-mill stuff? Will surely like this...it's different. Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster is absorbing from the word go, something which says a lot about what an intelligent director Tigmanshu Dhulia is. His efficiency lies in the fact, how tactfully he unfolds each plot in the film. Be it, the unmasking of the gangster’s character or the mistress’ death or the final blow in the climax, when the Begum shows her true colours.A powerful storyline, crisp screenplay, hard-hitting dialogues and impressive performance make Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster a delightful watch. Slightly dragged second half and editing are weak points, but can be ignored.Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster is surely a milestone in Tigmanshu Dhulia's career, that he will cherish both as a director and producer. So will the cine-goers, who won’t be disappointed. This one's highly recommended! Read moreReview by: Mayank Shekhar Site: HindustanTimes Ratings: 3.5/5
"Iss haveli mein sirf wafadar reh sakte hain Either way, game-changers in movies aren't necessarily the commercial successes of their years. Back in 2003, Bhardwaj's Maqbool was a good example of that: ignored by masses at large, adored by film-buffs, it is considered a classic among connoisseurs already. This one is admirably inspired, is almost a sophomore effort. As you'd know, that's a pretty hefty compliment to pay.(Only the truly trusted can stay in this palace)," says the queen to her chauffeur. "Aap wafadar hain? (You're the faithful one?)," casually snaps the driver. This is when the chauffeur and the queen, far away from the king, are locked in passionate love. It's a cracker line. This film is full of such; the skill and wit in its writing shows. Read moreReview by: SuperGoodMovies Site: SuperGoodMovies Ratings: 3.5/5

You enjoy every moment, every scene and every dialogue in the film. The team has done a fantastic job as far as casting is concerned. The dialogue delivery and scenes look so natural that you don’t feel like you are watching a film.
